Where to find street art in Hong Kong (Chine)
Hong Kong is one of the Asian cities where street art has most naturally embedded itself into the urban fabric. The historic districts of Sheung Wan, Sai Ying Pun and Central boast a remarkable density of murals tucked into steep alleyways, on covered staircases and on the walls of old shophouses, blending local Cantonese influences with collaborations involving international artists.
Since 2014, the HKwalls festival has structured and amplified this scene by annually inviting artists from around the world to paint site-specific murals rooted in each neighbourhood's historical and social context. The 9th edition in 2024 brought together over 32 artists and produced 41 murals across Central, Wan Chai and Tsim Sha Tsui, with a particular focus on climate change themes brought by European artists.
Beyond the festival, Hong Kong hosts permanent works that engage with the city's compact architecture: fine stencils on the brick walls of old tong lau tenements, trompe-l'oeil pieces playing on the verticality of towers, and colourful interventions that transform the lanes of Sai Ying Pun into a spontaneous art trail.
