Where to find street art in Erevan (Arménie)
Yerevan experienced an explosion of street art in the second half of the 2010s, driven by a creative youth seeking to reclaim a city long marked by Soviet urban planning. The historic Kond neighborhood, the oldest intact urban center of the capital, became from 2018 the primary laboratory of local mural art through the Kond Gallery project initiated by artist Sereg Navasardyan. By transforming abandoned walls into colorful artworks, the movement succeeded in drawing national and international attention to this neighborhood threatened with demolition.
In parallel, the program of 150 city center arches — passageways decorated by local artists with portraits of illustrious Armenians — introduced mural art into the heart of the city for ordinary residents. Artists like Robert Nikoghosyan populated Vardanants and other central streets with portraits of Frunzik Mkrtchyan, Sos Sargsyan, and Charles Aznavour. The 2018 Velvet Revolution also left its mark on the walls, with numerous murals of a political or civic dimension.
Today, festivals like Paris-Yerevan: Street Art and Urvakan contribute to internationalizing the local scene. The city maintains an interactive map of its works and regularly welcomes artists from around the world, making Yerevan an emerging destination for urban art enthusiasts in the Caucasus region.
