Where to find street art in Beyrouth (Liban)

Beirut is one of the most active street art capitals in the Middle East. From the 2000s onward, the walls of neighborhoods like Hamra, Mar Mikhael, and Gemmayzeh became canvases for local artists seeking to respond to the scars of civil war and the political parties' grip on public space. Collectives like Ashekman and individual artists like Yazan Halwani transformed entire facades into monumental murals combining Arabic calligraphy, portraiture, and political messaging.

The movement took shape around the desire to give residents a positive image of their city. Where militia leaders' posters once covered walls, portraits of poets, singers, and cultural figures gradually took their place. The Hamra district, once the intellectual and artistic hub of the Middle East, became the nerve center of this cultural renaissance through street art.

Today, despite economic crises and the 2020 port explosion, Beirut's street art scene remains vibrant. Many murals created after the explosion bear witness to residents' resilience. Events like "Ahla Fawda" regularly bring together local and international artists to transform the streets of the Lebanese capital into an open-air museum.
