Where to find street art in Shanghai (Chine)
Shanghai is the Chinese metropolis where street art has undergone the most structured development. The Moganshan Road district (M50), repurposed as an art district within former textile factories, has served since the 2000s as the epicentre of contemporary art and street art in the city, hosting over 140 galleries, studios and creative spaces from around twenty countries.
Over the years, leading international artists — Seth Globepainter, Millo, Kenji Chai — have been invited to paint monumental murals in districts such as Yangpu, Jing'an and Puxi, transforming the walls of apartment buildings into works visible from several streets away. These projects, often supported by institutions such as the Italian Cultural Institute or private real estate developers, have profoundly altered the visual landscape of certain university and residential neighbourhoods.
The local graffiti scene, long discreet, gradually asserted itself from the 2010s onward, with the emergence of Chinese artists who occupy the alleyways of Moganshan Road and the streets of Tianzifang, creating a dialogue between calligraphic tradition and contemporary urban aesthetics.
