Map of street art in West Hollywood (United States)
This independent city surrounded by Los Angeles is one of the most heavily walked mural grounds in the metropolis. Most of it runs along Melrose Avenue and its side streets, where shop walls serve as near-permanent supports: at the corner of North Laurel Avenue, the Crochet Rainbow and the Peace Sign rank among the most photographed pieces in town.
The logic there is commercial as much as artistic. These walls are commissioned, renewed and sometimes replaced as businesses change, producing rapid turnover: a Melrose mural has a life expectancy measured in months rather than years, unlike major municipal commissions.
Invader set seven mosaics here between January 2000 and May 2018, worth 140 points in the FlashInvaders game. Not one survived. That total loss rate, repeated in the neighbouring cities, comes both from the turnover of facades and from tile hunting, more active here than elsewhere.
