Washington DC is the federal capital of the United States, created in 1790 by act of Congress on neutral territory between Virginia and Maryland. The nation's political center around the National Mall, it hosts the White House, the Capitol, the Supreme Court, and the international institutions of the IMF and the World Bank.

Beyond its monumental core, DC is also a city with a strong African American identity - nicknamed "Chocolate City" in the 1970s - whose U Street neighborhood, the pre-war "Black Broadway," hosts a remarkable mural scene. The municipal program MuralsDC, launched in 2007, funds about twenty frescoes each year across the city to celebrate local heritage.

Artists like Aniekan Udofia, No Kings Collective, Cita Sadeli, and Trap Bob have for twenty years painted murals paying tribute to musicians (Duke Ellington, Marvin Gaye, Chuck Brown), civil rights activists, and the history of Washington's Black community.
