This beach city in Los Angeles County claims more than one hundred and seventy murals across barely twenty square kilometres, one of the highest densities in Southern California. Wilshire Boulevard, which crosses it end to end before running on to Beverly Hills and downtown Los Angeles, carries several of them, and each of the city's eight neighbourhoods has its share.
Subjects often follow the setting: the ocean, surf and skate culture, the history of the seafront and the pier. A municipal programme encouraged these commissions, which sets this scene apart from the industrial districts of Los Angeles, where painting grew out of the spontaneous occupation of derelict lots.
Invader set seven mosaics here between January 2000 and May 2018, two visits eighteen years apart, worth 170 points in the FlashInvaders game. All of them are gone, a fate shared across his campaigns in the metropolis: in the city of Los Angeles itself, 165 of 190 pieces are missing, a rate no European city comes close to.
