Where to find street art in Portland (United States)
Portland's street art scene has deep roots in the 1980s: the city's oldest surviving mural, "Art Fills the Void!" painted in 1982 by Gorilla Wallflare at SE 12th and Division, reflects a long-standing tradition of public art. The Portland Street Art Alliance has since built a solid community infrastructure, documenting and mapping nearly 1,000 public art pieces across the city.
The Alberta Arts District in Northeast Portland is the most mural-dense neighborhood, with works on social and environmental themes lining NE Alberta Street from MLK Jr. Blvd to 33rd Avenue. The Pearl District blends industrial heritage with contemporary art, while the Central Eastside Industrial District forms a third hub, accessible via a biking map published by the Street Art Alliance.
Last Thursday, a monthly art walk on Alberta Street running for over 30 years, and First Thursday in the Pearl District animate the scene each month. The city's Institute for Contemporary Art also organizes the Time-Based Art festival each September. Nearly 1,000 documented public artworks are spread across the city's neighborhoods.
