Philadelphia is recognized as the "Mural Capital of the World": the Mural Arts Program, founded in 1984 by Jane Golden as part of the city's anti-graffiti initiative, progressively transformed thousands of façades into community artworks. The program now commissions between 60 and 100 new projects annually and counts over 4,000 murals created since its founding.

West Philadelphia hosts Steve Powers' "A Love Letter for You" - a series of 50 murals along the Market Street corridor between 45th and 63rd Streets. South Philadelphia is known for Isaiah Zagar's Philadelphia Magic Gardens, a monumental mosaic installation covering multiple lots with mirror fragments. Fishtown, Northern Liberties, Kensington, and Point Breeze complete the main mural circuits.

Isaiah Zagar, Meg Saligman, and Steve Powers are among the artists most associated with the local scene. Keith Haring's "We The Youth" in Point Breeze reflects the program's longstanding international appeal. In 2026, USA Today ranked the city the top American destination for street art.
