Where to find street art in Minneapolis (United States)
Minneapolis has had an active mural tradition since the 1970s, but the killing of George Floyd in 2020 triggered an unprecedented surge in public art creation. East Lake Street alone saw more than 18 new murals appear in 2023, reflecting the engagement of the neighborhood's diverse immigrant and African American communities.
Powderhorn became the symbolic center of post-2020 activist art, with George Floyd Square at the corner of 38th Street and Chicago Avenue featuring the iconic portrait created by Cadex Herrera, Greta McLain, and Xena Goldman. Northeast Minneapolis — the city's main creative district — and the Phillips neighborhood, with its community-focused murals, complete the main poles of the scene.
Juxtaposition Arts, the City Mischief collective, and muralist Cadex Herrera are among the driving forces of the local scene. The Minneapolis Street Art Festival, held each August on Nicollet Mall, and Art-A-Whirl — the largest open studio tour in the United States — draw thousands each year. Over 1,000 painted plywood panels from the 2020 period have been preserved by the Memorialize the Movement initiative.
