Map of street art in Miami Beach (United States)

The resort strip is not the home of South Florida muralism: that belongs to Wynwood, across the bay, where Miami's warehouses were handed over to painters from the 2000s onward. Out on the barrier island, urban art is quieter and far more fragile. Invader set 35 mosaics here across two visits, the first on 25 November 2010, the last completed on 9 December 2012, both falling around the Art Basel fair.

The tiles followed the main southern arteries: Collins Avenue, Washington Avenue, Ocean Drive and the South Beach boardwalk, which is to say the most photographed and most frequently repainted Art Deco facades on the coast.

That also explains what became of the series: thirty of the thirty-five pieces are gone. That 86 per cent loss matches the large American cities, with New York and Los Angeles both close to 90 per cent, while European campaigns of the same age have held up far better. Salt air, hotel refits and souvenir hunters each take their share. The full set was worth 870 points in the FlashInvaders game.
