Where to find street art in Detroit (United States)

Detroit's mural tradition has deep roots: Diego Rivera's frescoes commissioned in the 1930s at the Detroit Institute of Arts established a lasting connection between the industrial city and monumental painting. In 1986, artist Tyree Guyton founded the Heidelberg Project on the city's East Side, transforming abandoned houses and lots into colorful art installations that drew international attention.

Eastern Market is now the epicenter of the contemporary scene, with over 100 murals added in the past six years by local and international artists. The Grand River Creative Corridor on the West Side brings together over 100 works across 15 buildings, while Belt Alley in Downtown was transformed in 2014 into an outdoor mural gallery. Corktown rounds out the main circuit with murals covering its historic façades.

Muralist Hubert Massey and the curatorial collective 1xRUN are among the driving forces of the current scene. The Murals in the Market festival, held each September at Eastern Market, has been rated among the world's best street art events by Smithsonian Magazine. The city has also launched an official commission of 200 murals across residential neighborhoods.
