Glasgow's street art movement has roots in the economic hardships of the 1980s, when factory closures left much of the city centre derelict. The first documented mural appeared in 2008, and in 2014 the city council officially launched the City Centre Mural Trail - a programme to transform abandoned facades into public artworks, turning anti-graffiti paint-overs into a structured creative initiative.

The city centre holds the highest concentration of works, spread along High Street, Mitchell Street, Wilson Street and Ingram Street. Merchant City, the former commercial quarter, features murals by Rogue One around Brunswick Lane and Candleriggs. Further west, Finnieston - once a district of industrial warehouses - has emerged as a creative hub where street art sits alongside studios and independent venues.

Australian artist SMUG (Sam Bates), resident for over two decades, is the most recognised local muralist, known for hyper-realistic large-scale works including a portrait of Saint Mungo on High Street. Rogue One and Klingatron are two further prominent figures. Each May, the Yardworks Festival takes over SWG3 - a converted tobacco factory - where 700 metres of walls are handed to around a hundred international artists over a single weekend. Daily guided tours and a free trail map complete the offer.
