The town faces Newcastle across the Tyne, and the two scenes are hard to separate: murals are spread along both banks, linked by the bridges and by the same public commissions. The Quayside, with its industrial architecture and refurbished wharves, offers the most visible surfaces.

Among the notable work in the area, local artist Alex Mulholland, who signs as Mul, painted what was presented as the longest pavement mural in the United Kingdom on a disused bus lane on the Quayside. Andy Welland unrolled a piece of more than ninety metres along the riverbank. These commissions come from municipal regeneration programmes rather than from spontaneous initiative.

Invader came through in 2006, spreading seven mosaics between 23 May and 27 September for 120 points in the FlashInvaders game. Not one has been lost in nearly twenty years, a remarkable survival rate for a British campaign, and nothing like what his American series show.
