Where to find street art in Edinburgh (United Kingdom)
Edinburgh's street art scene developed from the late 1980s, shaped by New York hip-hop culture and European graffiti movements. It evolved steadily from an underground practice into a structured public art landscape, with community-supported mural projects now central to several neighborhoods' cultural identity.
Leith is the primary mural hub, with large-scale works along Leith Walk, Constitution Street, and Bernard Street. The Cowgate and Old Town feature art tucked into narrow closes between historic buildings, while the Water of Leith walkway toward Dean Village weaves murals through a natural riverside setting.
Guido van Helten, Breeze Thirteen, and Smug are among the most visible artists in the scene. The Colinton Tunnel — a 140-meter Victorian railway passage — is Scotland's largest heritage mural, completed between 2018 and 2022 by Chris Rutterford with over 600 community participants. The Edinburgh Art Festival and Leith Late bring additional street art programming each summer.
