Bristol is one of the world's most celebrated street art cities, home to a scene that took root in the early 1980s when 3D (Robert Del Naja, later of Massive Attack) was among the first to bring hip-hop-influenced graffiti to the walls of Stokes Croft. By the 1990s, Banksy, Inkie and Cheo had expanded the local vocabulary with stencilling and large-scale murals. Banksy's earliest iconic works - including "Mild Mild West" in Stokes Croft and "Well Hung Lover" on Park Street - remain among the city's most visited landmarks.

Stokes Croft functions as a constantly evolving open-air gallery at the heart of the city's counter-culture. Bedminster and Southville, in south Bristol, form the unofficial art district, with over 170 murals along North Street and surrounding streets. Nelson Street was transformed in 2011 by the See No Evil project, creating one of the densest street art corridors in the United Kingdom.

Upfest, founded in 2008 by Stephen Hayles, is Europe's largest street art festival, bringing over 250 artists to Bedminster and Southville across 17 days each year and drawing 80,000 visitors. More than 5,000 artists have participated since its launch. Year-round guided tours and self-guided maps allow visitors to explore the works across Bristol at their own pace.
