Istanbul's street art scene took shape largely from 2012 onward, with the Mural Istanbul Festival, established in the Yeldeğirmeni district of Kadıköy on the Asian shore. The festival invited international artists to paint the walls of this working-class neighborhood, turning its streets into an open-air gallery.

Today, Yeldeğirmeni and the broader Kadıköy district are home to hundreds of murals, stencils, and paste-ups, making the Asian side of the city the heart of Istanbul's urban art scene. Street art here engages in constant dialogue with Ottoman heritage and the energy of a neighborhood in full transformation.
