Where to find street art in Kairouan (Tunisia)
Kairouan is one of the oldest Islamic cities in North Africa, founded in 670 AD by Arab general Uqba ibn Nafi. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is considered the fourth holiest city in Islam and is home to the Great Mosque of Kairouan, one of the oldest Islamic monuments in the world.
Kairouan's medina is a labyrinth of narrow lanes lined with whitewashed houses and craft workshops where weavers perpetuate the tradition of Berber carpet-making. The city is renowned for its famous makrouds, date and semolina cakes that perfume the souks during religious festivals.
Since the Tunisian revolution of 2011, Kairouan has become a platform for engaged street art, notably through Franco-Tunisian artist eL Seed, who created his first large-scale Arabic calligraphy mural on the walls of the old medina in 2012.
