Map of street art in Houmt Souk (Tunisia)
The main town of Djerba owes its street art to two separate movements. The first came from the neighbouring village of Erriadh, some twenty minutes away by road, where the Djerbahood project brought together 150 artists from 30 countries in 2014 and left more than 250 murals on its whitewashed walls. The second came to Houmt Souk itself: between 11 and 22 November 2019, Invader set 21 mosaics here, worth 820 points in the FlashInvaders game.
The tiles are spread between the medina and its souks, rue Mohamed Ferjani, avenue Abdelhamid el Kadhi and the hamlet of Taourit, back from the coast. Only two are missing, which says something about the local fabric: low walls, lime-washed, regularly repainted but rarely knocked down.
Scale shifts from one quarter to the next. Around the fishing harbour and the old fondouks, interventions stay discreet, suited to a protected historic centre. The large painted surfaces are at Erriadh, where wall painting has become a reason to visit in its own right and supports a local economy of guides and cafés.
