Map of street art in Le Locle (Switzerland)

A watchmaking town in the Neuchâtel Jura, listed alongside neighbouring La Chaux-de-Fonds as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its watchmaking urban planning, Le Locle has turned mural painting into public policy. Since 2018 the Luxor Factory association has been building the exomusée here, an open-air museum with no opening hours, inviting internationally known artists to paint facades every year. The council voted an annual grant of 100,000 francs for the 2024-2027 period.

Murals run across apartment blocks in the centre and the outskirts, often at considerable scale: Grande-Rue, rue du Pont, rue Alexis-Marie-Piaget, rue Marie-Anne-Calame and rue Daniel-Jeanrichard, out to Col-des-Roches on the western edge. Each exomusée piece is documented with its title, year and surface area.

The roster mixes French and international names: OakOak from Saint-Étienne, who plays with street furniture, Polish artist NeSpoon and her painted lacework, Levalet and his black-and-white paste-ups, James Colomina and his red figures, plus TocToc and Philippe Chevrinais. Nevercrew and Mona Caron have also worked here, alongside Carolus, painting trompe-l'oeil across the region since 1985.
