Stockholm is internationally recognized for its Tunnelbana metro system, dubbed "the world's longest art gallery": since 1957, more than 150 Swedish artists have decorated over 100 stations across 110 kilometres of track. A 1963 city bylaw requiring 1% of public construction budgets to be spent on accessible art has long underpinned public creativity. A zero-tolerance policy introduced in 2007 pushed the outdoor scene toward designated spaces.

Södermalm, the southern island once known as a working-class district, has become the beating heart of the city's creative scene, with murals and stencils spread across its streets. Snösätra, a former industrial wasteland in the Rågsved district, was transformed in 2014 into a Graffiti Wall of Fame - one of Europe's largest open-air urban art spaces. The annual Snösätra festival draws more than 60 national and international artists for live painting, workshops and performances.

Amara Por Dios is one of the most celebrated local artists, known for large-scale murals in vibrant colours. Brazilian duo Os Gemeos created a major work at Fiskargatan in the city centre. Metro tours and guided walks through Södermalm offer complementary ways to explore Stockholm's two-track approach to urban art.
