Galicia's leading fishing port, Vigo stretches along its ría on Spain's Atlantic coast. The sea shapes the city: industrial fishing, the canning industry and the Zona Franca free trade zone drive its economy and feed the imagery of the artists who paint its walls.

Here street art is public policy. Launched in 2015, the municipal programme « Vigo, cidade de cor » has transformed more than 190 spaces across the city's neighbourhoods, turning party walls, facades, street furniture and neglected corners into the hanging space of an open-air museum. Each edition draws on a municipal budget of around 218,000 euros, the twelfth covering fifteen walls.

The line-up mixes Galician artists with international names, bringing work from Argentina, Mexico, Poland, Greece and the rest of Spain. The tall party walls of the residential districts, from Teis to Lavadores, hold the most monumental pieces, often visible from far down the steep streets that drop towards the ría.
