This university city in Castile and León, whose monumental ensemble in Villamayor stone is UNESCO-listed, carries a trio of jellyfish handled in black and white.
The choice of monochrome is not incidental in a city whose golden facades make up most of its visual identity. A colourless intervention presents itself as a drawing on the stone rather than a stain, which makes it acceptable where a saturated mural would be ruled out. That is the strategy of several artists working in protected centres.
The jellyfish, a floating motif without edges, belongs to that repertoire of animals muralists use for their shape more than their symbolism: it fills an irregular surface, adapts to openings and corners, and requires no perspective. It is a convenient subject as much as a motif.
