Map of street art in Penelles (Spain)

Street art appeared in Penelles, a village of around 500 inhabitants in the La Noguera county (province of Lleida, Catalonia), in 2016 with the launch of the GarGar Festival de murals i d'art rural. Run by the Binomic collective alongside the town council and the Diputació de Lleida, the event, whose name echoes the call of a local bird, was set up to fight rural depopulation and turn the streets into an open-air museum.

The murals are spread across the whole village and can be followed on a circular walk of about one hour. Carrer del Carme holds the tourism office, the starting point for the route and its mural map. Other stops include the plaça Major, a former agricultural warehouse reused for large animal compositions, the façade of the Lo Xaragall bar and the Sant Joan Baptista church, which houses an interior painting by Berni Puig.

The town now counts close to 160 murals. Held every first weekend of May, the festival draws more than 300 applications a year and selects between 20 and 30 artists. Painters such as BKFOXX, the Belgian DZIA, the Galician Wedo Goas and Sebastien Waknine have worked here, on themes including rural women and environmental protection. A map updated each year is sold at the tourism office, and guided tours are also available.
