This Biscay fishing port, on the Spanish Basque coast, carries a mural by Sabotaje al Montaje titled Las entrañas de la memoria, the entrails of memory.

The collective, from the Canary Islands, works monumental portraiture in a social register: faces of anonymous people, often workers or the elderly, painted at a scale that makes them unavoidable. The title of this piece states the intent, that of a working-class and maritime memory the mural exhumes.

The Spanish Basque Country has a long tradition of political mural painting, born in the 1970s with murals of propaganda and protest. That precedence changes the standing of urban art in the region: the painted wall has long been a support for public speech there, and contemporary commissions belong to that continuity rather than breaking with it.
