This commune in Barcelona's northern suburbs carries a tribute to Yayoi Kusama: a polka-dotted pumpkin, a motif the Japanese artist has been working since the 1940s.

Paying tribute to a living artist is a delicate exercise in urban art, where reusing a protected motif raises the question of copyright as much as that of originality. It is nonetheless common practice, graffiti culture having always favoured the circulation of images over their ownership.

Catalonia has a long-standing scene, carried by Barcelona, whose painted shop shutters trained generations of painters. The Barcelona council hardened its policy in the 2000s, with fines and systematic removals, which pushed part of the practice out to the surrounding communes, less watchful and with more surfaces available.
