Map of street art in Errenteria (Spain)

Founded in 1320 as Villanueva de Oiarso, Errenteria grew into one of the most industrial towns in Gipuzkoa, gaining factories, a railway and the nickname of little Manchester. Its walls tell that working-class story: the 700th anniversary of the town charter, marked from 2020, opened a run of municipal mural commissions, most of them painted during the summer of 2021.

The painted walls sit in the lower part of town. On Lehendakari Agirre square, a mural by Idoia Beratarbide, an artist from Oiartzun, looks at industrial memory and at the women who worked in the mills. In the Ugarritza area, where Santa Klara kalea meets Zapirain Anaien kalea, a teal and white frieze lays out a timeline of local women. A wall on Miguel Irastorza street is tied to the Atlantikaldia festival, and residents of the Gaztaño district painted their own pelota court.

Work here is largely collective. The duo GERO ARTE, Claudia Pennese and Iñigo Hernández Aycart, run participatory projects with the Emakumeen Etxea women's house and its Jane Gamon feminist urbanism group, which also had violet walking routes painted onto the tarmac. Atlantikaldia, a festival of Atlantic cultures, fills late September.
