Where to find street art in Johannesburg (South Africa)

Johannesburg, nicknamed 'eGoli' (City of Gold) or simply 'Joburg', is South Africa's largest metropolis and one of the continent's most dynamic economic centres. Founded in 1886 during the Witwatersrand gold rush, it built its identity on mineral wealth before becoming a vibrant cultural melting pot in the post-apartheid era.

Its street art scene emerged in the 1980s and 1990s, driven by a generation of young Joburgers who claimed the landscape of crumbling, abandoned inner-city buildings to channel their frustrations amid soaring unemployment. After 1994, the movement evolved into a recognised and celebrated public art form, particularly in the Maboneng precinct ('place of light' in Sesotho), redeveloped from 2009, and in Braamfontein, where the annual City of Gold Urban Art Festival brings together local and international artists to create monumental murals.

Today, works by figures such as Dbongz, Faith47, and Falko stand alongside contributions from visiting artists across the CBD, Newtown, Maboneng, and Soweto. Johannesburg has established itself as Africa's street art capital — a city where every mural tells a fragment of a collective story still being written.
