This city in southern Russia, capital of the Kuban and one of the country's most dynamic, carries a mural by Kseniia Kokel depicting a young woman drinking coffee.

The everyday subject, an ordinary scene without symbolic charge, cuts against the epic or fantastical register dominant in the muralism of the Moscow region. It corresponds to a use closer to illustration than to monument, and is found more often in growing cities, where mural commissioning accompanies the opening of shops and public venues.

Krasnodar has seen some of the strongest population growth in Russia since the 2000s, with massive new construction producing whole districts of bare gable ends. That configuration, comparable to Spanish coastal cities in the 1990s, mechanically calls for mural painting.
