Map of street art in Funchal (Portugal)
Street art here was born from disaster: in February 2010, torrential rain and mudslides devastated the historic centre. That same year, artist José Zyberchema launched the Arte de Portas Abertas ("art of open doors") project to revive the neglected old quarter of Funchal. Painting house doors was inspired by the Ligurian village of Valloria, decorated this way since 1994; the first was by Argentine-Polish artist Marcos Milewski.
The project centres on the Zona Velha, the old town beside the harbour. Rua de Santa Maria forms its main axis: painted door panels line the façades, from traditional Madeiran motifs to contemporary abstract designs. Other decorated doors stand nearby, such as those of Estúdio 21 on Rua Latino Coelho. The display keeps changing, joined by murals and poems on the walls.
More than 200 doors have been painted by around a hundred artists, including architect Paulo David and designer Nini Andrade Silva. Beyond the doors, murals appear across the city, among them two of footballer Cristiano Ronaldo, one near the Mercado dos Lavradores and a larger one in Santo António. The official website provides a location map, and guided walks follow the route, tagged #artedeportasabertas.
