Map of street art in Giżycko (Poland)

This Masurian town, built on the isthmus separating two large lakes, presents itself as Poland's sailing capital. Its three recorded murals all take up that setting: boats on the lake, a triptych devoted to the town and to sailing, and a stretch of water covered in water lilies.

All are signed Maria Szulc. That unity of hand, rare for a town of this size, produces a coherence dispersed commissions never achieve: three walls, one subject, one palette, and a route that reads as a series rather than a collection.

Tourism explains the commission. The Masurian lake district is the main summer destination of north-eastern Poland, and mural painting serves there as visual welcome, in a peaceful register matching what visitors come for. The same logic is found in most European lakeside towns.
