Where to find street art in Gdańsk (Poland)
Gdańsk is a port city in northern Poland on the Baltic Sea, known for its reconstructed historic centre of colourful gabled houses and its role in the history of the Solidarność movement. From 1997 the city hosted one of the first monumental mural festivals in Eastern Europe, turning the Zaspa residential district into the largest open-air mural gallery in Poland.
Zaspa, built in the 1960s–70s on the site of Gdańsk's former airport, now counts more than sixty monumental frescoes painted on the gable walls of its tower blocks. Created by Polish and international artists since 1997, these works address themes ranging from historical memory to contemporary abstraction. The collection is managed by the Gdańsk Institute of Urban Culture.
The Monumental Art festival has made Gdańsk an international reference for large-scale street art. Artists such as M-City, Piotr Szwabe and the Italian 2501 have left works that dialogue with the Soviet-era architecture of the buildings while asserting a visual identity specific to the city.
