This town in southern Norway carries a piece by Strøk, the artist name of Anders Gjennestad, one of the most recognised stencil artists in Scandinavia: three climbers caught mid-ascent.

His work rests on a constant device: human figures detached from any setting, often seen from above or below, accompanied by their cast shadow, so that they appear to climb, fall or float along the wall. The artist uses the irregularities of the support, drainpipes, corners, openings, as elements of the composition rather than as obstacles.

Norway has an urban art scene modest in volume but well regarded, and the Stavanger festival, Nuart, created in 2001, is among the oldest in Europe and helped make several generations of international stencil artists known.
