Where to find street art in Christchurch (New Zealand)

Ōtautahi Christchurch, the capital of New Zealand's Canterbury region, has become one of the world's leading street art capitals following the devastating 2011 earthquake. The walls left by the demolition of thousands of buildings offered vast surfaces for local and international artists, transforming the city into an open-air gallery.

Today, more than 250 street art works are scattered across the CBD, supported by organisations such as Watch This Space and the FLARE Street Art Festival, which attract artists from around the world every year. Lonely Planet named Christchurch a global street art capital in 2017, alongside New York, London and Berlin.

Collectives such as DTR Crew — bringing together Wongi Wilson, Dcypher, Ikarus and Jacob Yikes — have played a central role in this transformation, creating monumental murals that tell the story and identity of Ōtautahi, blending colonial heritage, Māori culture and post-earthquake resilience.
