Map of street art in Deventer (Netherlands)

A Hanseatic town in Overijssel set on the river IJssel, Deventer has set out to become the mural capital of the Netherlands. The Street Art Streets association runs a commissioning programme there aiming at fifty painted walls or more, each conceived as a fragment of local history rather than as decoration.

The resulting route can be walked or cycled: 3.4 km and around twenty works in the old centre, 41 km and about twenty more in the outer districts. It starts at the Hof van Adwaita, a courtyard where GOMAD painted the poet it is named after in 2020, ten minutes from the station.

The subjects stay resolutely local. Groeten uit Deventer, by graphic designer Peter Kortleve, gathers the Lebuinuskerk tower, the diarist Etty Hillesum and the town's book market; other walls tell the story of a single neighbourhood, such as the series painted in the Sluiswijk. Every work stands in public space and is free to see.
