Map of street art in Kathmandu (Nepal)
The valley saw two waves of urban art, five years apart and unconnected. The first came from Paris: between 27 February and 5 March 2008, Invader cemented 28 mosaics into the Nepali capital, along Jyatha Marg, Chandraman Maskey Marg, Gangalal Marg and Nisthananda Marg. Twelve have since disappeared, the set carrying 530 points in the FlashInvaders game.
The second was local and far broader. Launched in 2012 by the Sattya Media Arts Collective and funded by the Dutch Prince Claus Fund, the Kolor Kathmandu project produced 75 murals in a single year, one for each district of Nepal, with every artist expected to research their district before painting. The walls are spread across Baluwatar, Sankhamul, Bhotahiti, Jawalakhel and Kupondole on the Lalitpur side.
Twelve international muralists took part, among them the German duo Herakut, alongside twenty-five Nepali artists. The project durably changed the standing of wall painting in the valley, shifting it from political display towards work about identity and memory, on facades that are rarely painted over.
