Map of street art in George Town (Malaysia)

George Town is the capital of the state of Penang, Malaysia, founded in the late 18th century by the British East India Company. Its historic center, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2008, concentrates one of the densest colonial architectures in Southeast Asia — Chinese shophouses, Tamil temples, Malay mosques, and neo-classical British buildings coexisting along narrow streets.

Since 2012, George Town has become one of the world's most recognized street art destinations. Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic, invited as part of the George Town Festival, painted a series of murals combining wall painting with three-dimensional installations — real bicycles, swings, motorcycles — integrated into the streets of the heritage district.

His works triggered a movement that permanently transformed the neighborhood: dozens of local and international artists joined the Marking George Town initiative, covering the UNESCO perimeter with artistic interventions that engage with the historic fabric and the remaining communities of the city center.
