Map of street art in Pisa (Italy)
The city of the leaning tower holds one of the most important murals of the twentieth century: Tuttomondo, painted by Keith Haring in June 1989 on the rear wall of the church of Sant'Antonio, near the station.
The mural unfolds some thirty interlocking figures in the style that became the American artist's signature, black-outlined silhouettes without faces, chained to one another across one hundred and eighty square metres. The title states the intent: a whole world held in a single tangle of bodies, on the theme of peace and harmony.
It is Haring's last public work, he died in February 1990, and the only one he conceived as permanent: all the rest of his street work, in New York and elsewhere, was ephemeral by nature. That status makes this wall a place of pilgrimage for urban art enthusiasts, and one of the rare cases where a street mural was treated as a monument from the outset.
