This Abruzzo village, set against the Apennines in the province of L'Aquila, turned depopulation into an artistic project. Since 2017, the Borgo Universo festival has invited painters here every summer for four days, with a stated intention: to revive the local economy through culture and keep residents in place. More than fifty works, murals, sculptures and installations, now cover the walls of its houses.

What sets the place apart is its second subject, astronomy. The Torre delle Stelle, a fourteenth-century tower in the centre, houses an observatory and a planetarium, in memory of Filippo Angelitti, an astronomer born here in 1856. The festival therefore crosses mural painting with the night sky, with observation evenings and guided routes between the frescoes.

The line-up is international: Spain's Okuda with his multicoloured geometric compositions, Italy's Millo with his black-and-white figures set against architecture, An Wei and Matlakas. Admission is free and the works stay visible all year, which has made this village of a few hundred inhabitants a recognised stop on the Italian urban art circuit.
