Map of street art in Tehran (Iran)
Tehran is the capital and largest city of Iran, set at the foot of the Alborz Mountains. A metropolis of more than nine million people, it concentrates much of the country's political, economic, and cultural life.
Its street art scene is distinctive: as early as the 2000s, the Tehran Municipality launched a vast urban beautification program, turning hundreds of facades into supports for official muralism. Mehdi Ghadyanloo painted more than a hundred monumental trompe-l'œil frescoes there, giving the city an internationally recognizable visual signature.
Alongside this institutional muralism, a more clandestine scene developed with artists like Black Hand, dubbed the "Iranian Banksy," whose political stencils appear and vanish at the will of the authorities. This dual identity — between official monumental works and ephemeral protest stencils — makes Tehran a singular ground for urban creation in the Middle East.
