Map of street art in Yogyakarta (Indonesia)

Yogyakarta — nicknamed Jogja by its inhabitants — is the cultural heart of Central Java, in the Indonesian archipelago. Capital of a still-active sultanate, university city, and home to the great traditions of wayang (shadow theater) and batik, it preserves an exceptionally dense artistic identity.

Its street art scene is one of the most active in Southeast Asia. As early as the 1990s, the Apotik Komik collective and then Samuel Indratma founded the Jogja Mural Forum (2005), turning the city's walls into a vast collective workshop. The Mural Jogja Festival, the Suryatmajan tourism district, and the Lempuyangan overpass host hundreds of works.

Artists such as Eko Nugroho, Anti Tank, Stereoflow, and Mufti "Amenkcoy" Priyanka have developed an original visual language combining pop culture, traditional Javanese motifs, and political critique. Yogyakarta has established itself as a reference for contemporary Indonesian muralism.
