Map of street art in Varanasi (India)

The holy city on the Ganges received Invader in March 2008, between the 8th and the 14th: fourteen mosaics set into its lanes and onto the ghats, the monumental stairways running down to the river. The pieces are spread between Dashashwamedh Ghat, Kedar Ghat and the alleys linking them, worth 300 points in the FlashInvaders game. Eight have gone since, a high attrition rate that the monsoon climate partly explains.

The contrast struck observers at the time: arcade game ships cemented onto worn stone walls, in a maze that appeared not to have shifted in two centuries. It was that dissonance, more than the technique, that sent photographs of this campaign around the world.

Local wall painting follows an entirely different tradition. Facades and steps carry devotional images of Hindu deities, and the ghats also host styles descended from Indian folk art, gond, madhubani and warli, scaled up onto walls. Varanasi has therefore been painted for a very long time, but according to codes that owe nothing to Western graffiti.
