Map of street art in Kolkata (India)
Kolkata, formerly Calcutta, is the capital of West Bengal and India's third metropolis with more than fourteen million people in its metropolitan area. Former capital of British India (1772-1911), it retains a unique colonial heritage mingled with an intense Bengali cultural life — literature, theater, cinema, painting.
Its urban landscape is shaped each year by the temporary structures of Durga Puja, where the Kumartuli district concentrates hundreds of workshops in which artisans sculpt the goddess's idols. This centuries-old tradition coexists with an emerging street art scene: the Behala Art Fest, launched in 2020 by Sanatan Dinda, turns the streets of Behala into a collective gallery each season.
Muralism took root through interventions by the St+art India Foundation (the "Donate a Wall" program with Asian Paints) and artists like Afzan Pirzade and Hindola Banerjee. Kolkata is gradually emerging as a recognized ground for Indian contemporary muralism, drawing strength from the crossroads between traditional craft and urban expression.
