Where to find street art in Reykjavík (Iceland)
Reykjavík is Iceland's capital and one of the world's most northerly. Despite its modest size, the city has a remarkably vibrant artistic and cultural scene, with numerous galleries, institutions, and alternative spaces concentrated in districts 101 and 107. Street art emerged gradually from the 2000s onwards, driven by growing institutional tolerance and municipal support for commissioned mural projects.
Laugavegur street and its adjacent arteries form the hub of galleries and creative shops, while the Grandi harbour district — a former industrial zone turned creative neighbourhood — is home to some of the city's most monumental works. Renowned foreign artists, notably Australian, British, and American, have completed murals during residencies or private commissions, alongside local artists such as Sara Riel and Selur.
By 2024, over 160 murals and wall paintings have been mapped across the city, reflecting a fully fledged street art scene that balances social commentary, celebration of Icelandic heritage, and contemporary abstraction.
