Where to find street art in Heraklion (Greece)

Heraklion, the capital of Crete, is home to a vibrant street art scene that has grown over the years around the working-class district of Lakkos and along the edges of the Venetian walls. The municipal festival "Art en Route" brings together local and international artists each year to reclaim the city's walls, turning alleys and building facades into open-air galleries.

The Natural History Museum of Crete, located on the coastal Sofoklis Venizelou Avenue, is one of the key sites for urban art in the city: since 2021 its facade has featured a monumental work by Vincent Parisot, a Franco-Cretan artist who has been based in Heraklion since 2009. Other artists such as George Chatzivasilis and Elizabeth Bauer have also contributed to enriching the mural landscape of the Cretan capital.

The city stands out for the quality of its interventions, which often engage in dialogue with the Minoan and Byzantine heritage of the region. Mythological, ecological and social themes intertwine on the walls of Heraklion, reflecting the Mediterranean and cosmopolitan identity of a city that looks as much toward its past as toward contemporary creation.
