Leipzig is a city in Saxony, eastern Germany, long nicknamed 'Heldenstadt' (City of Heroes) for its role in the 1989 German reunification. The street art scene here is particularly vibrant, especially in the neighborhoods of Connewitz, Plagwitz and Lindenau, where former industrial buildings and Soviet-era structures have been transformed into open-air galleries.
The IBUg festival (Industriebrachenumgestaltung) is one of Germany's flagship street art events. In 2023, it came to Leipzig for the first time, taking over the former RAW Engelsdorf railway repair depot, where more than 70 international artists transformed 10,000 m² of derelict buildings.
