This resort town on the Côte de Jade carries mural art owing as much to easel painting as to graffiti. Its most identifiable piece is signed Alain Thomas, a Nantes painter known for naive compositions peopled with exotic birds: his flight of macaws transposes onto a wall a vocabulary first conceived for canvas.
The other interventions belong to the same decorative register, with naive murals and blue arabesques painted on an electrical substation. That last support, the cabinet or transformer, has become the default surface for communes wanting to brighten things up without touching protected fabric.
The Côte de Jade, busy in summer and far quieter the rest of the year, imposes a double constraint on these commissions: holding up against sea spray and staying legible in a setting that changes completely with the season. Bright colours and simple motifs answer that directly.
