On the southern edge of Caen, this commune remained a farming village until the 1960s, then grew quickly as the Caen area expanded, first to house people who had lost their homes in 1944 and later families repatriated from Algeria. It now has close to 12,000 inhabitants.

The town is organised around three historic sectors that became districts: Ifs-Bourg around the church of Saint-André, Ifs-Plaine, the most built-up part, and Ifs-Bras to the south-east. Amid its housing estates, suburban streets and public buildings stands Le Sablier, formerly the Espace Jean Vilar and now the main cultural venue.

In 2022 the Palma festival, founded in 2016 to bring artists into public space around Caen, handed the facades of Le Sablier to Nelio. He painted a vast abstract composition in blues, greens and ochres that wraps around the whole building.
