Map of street art in Gannat (France)
This small Allier town, at the gateway to the Chaîne des Puys, carries three murals whose subjects speak of territory and of current events. One shows a cyclist against a volcanic sunset, another a stylised Allier landscape, the third was painted for the 2024 Olympic Games.
That last belongs to a now common usage: local authorities commission murals to mark a national event, which gives them a budget, a schedule and a subject. Mural painting then serves less an artist's expression than a commune's festive signage.
The register is illustrative and legible, suited to an audience that is not made of urban art enthusiasts. The surrounding relief, between volcanoes and valley, provides a motif most of these commissions take up, as everywhere in the Auvergne where landscape is the first tourist argument.
