Map of street art in Colombelles (France)
For centuries a farming village of a few hundred people, this commune north-east of Caen became a working-class town after a steelworks, later the Société métallurgique de Normandie, opened on its land in 1913. Four-fifths of it was destroyed during the Battle of Caen in 1944, and it was rebuilt around the plant until the industrial site was dismantled in 1993-1994.
Since 2006 the town has been renewing its centre and building two new districts: Jean-Jaurès, on the former SMN site, and Le Libéra next to it. The Caen la mer street art booklet lists a painting by Seb Toussaint on Rue des Ateliers and one by Mookimax on Avenue de la Falaise, while the Plateau workers' estate, shared with Mondeville and Giberville, recalls the steel era.
The Palma festival, which has invited artists to the Caen area since 2016, left a mural by Selah here in 2019 on the Sivom des Trois Vallées music school on Rue du Cuirassé-Potemkine. It grew out of a residency with secondary school pupils from neighbouring Mondeville.
